IMPORTANT!!!!
Many people are still thinking of attending the reunion weekend events and we are fielding inquiries on almost a daily basis. We have extended the deadline date - PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR RESERVATION IMMEDIATELY!
ACHS TOUR OF THE SCHOOL
In our last newsletter, we updated the time for the Back-to-School Tour. This walk-through of our high school building has now been finalized and the NEW scheduled date and TIME is on Saturday September 9, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. I highly urge anyone who has NOT been back to the high school since our last reunion or even before that time, to attend the tour. You will be amazed at the incredible contemporary look of the school, successfully blending the old/traditional architecture with the very modern look of the 21st century. The tour is FREE and we ask anyone who would like to participate to email me (at the email address directly below) so we have a ballpark idea of how many people will attend. If you plan to attend, the tour group will be congregating at the flagpole in the front quad of the school from 10:15-10:30 AM, and the tour will start promptly at 10:30 AM. I will be there at 10:15 AM to greet all of our classmates who will be attending the tour.
The two people who will be conducting the tour are Amherst alumni who are familiar to many of the people in our class, Ellen Marshall, class of 1969 and Marilyn Rohl, class of 1970. Both Ellen and Marilyn have been very active alumni in the ACAF alumni Foundation and have both served as board presidents for multiple terms, and are very experienced in guiding the tour (and knowing a lot of you who have been on the tours previously). If you participate in the tour, you will be in “good hands”! Both Ellen and Marilyn have been, or about to do Back-to-School tours with other classes who are having their reunion events before our weekend, so we expect a very smooth event that morning.
LADIES LUNCH FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Cynthia (Gath) Petersen will once again have a Ladies Luncheon. It has previously been held on the Saturday afternoon of the reunion weekend. This year, it will be hosted at the Eagle House, 5578 Main St. in Williamsville Village on FRIDAY September 8 at 12 NOON. Those of you who would be interested in attending, can contact Cynthia directly via FB or email:
[email protected]
REUNION COMMITTEE OUTREACH
The Reunion Committee has done a very extensive outreach campaign to individually contact as many classmates as possible as we approach the reunion weekend. We have had some very nice conversations and emails with various people and there are some people considering attending who have not attended in some time or not at all. We continue to receive inquiries from various people who may possibly attend all or parts of our weekend events.
FACEBOOK CHATS WITH CYNTHIA (GATH) PETERSEN
I did a Facebook chat with Cynthia (Gath) Petersen last evening (Saturday 8/12). We are on schedule to possibly do two additional Facebook chats, so if you see this email and wish to participate on the chat, we welcome you to do so. The chats are archived so you are able to watch them at your convenience, and hopefully they are of interest and will help if you have questions about the events.
AMHERST SCHOOL DISTRICT FACULTY R.I.P.
Buffalo State has produced literally thousands of people who have worked in the Educational world, including a number of our class members who were with me when I attended the college from 1968-1973 (I was on the 5-year plan and DID graduate!) A large number of our teachers in all 4 elementary schools, as well as the Junior (now Middle) High School and the Senior High School were products of the Education department of Buffalo State. As an alumnus, I receive our semi-annual 1300 Elmwood alumni book. The In Memoriam pages contain updates on the passing of alumni, and unfortunately, the most recent issue contained 3 former members of our Amherst School District. They are listed as follows:
Richard Stotz Sr. - 5th grade teacher at Smallwood Drive Elementary School, beginning in 1960. Mr. Stotz joined Dorothy Longley, Bernadette Linkowski, and Monroe Whiting as 5th grade teachers that school year. Mr. Stotz passed away in 2022.
Robert W. Sekowski – 7th grade Unified Program (remember “Unified”? – Social Studies and English) in 1962-63 also passed away in 2022.
Edward P Crapol – also a 7th grade Unified Program teacher in 1962-63 – Dr. Crapol eventually became a very distinguished professor at William and Mary University. He passed away 2021.
All three educators’ obituaries are available on the ACAF website under the In Memory section of the website.
FINALLY…
We will continue to update you with information as it becomes available and relevant to the reunion. On behalf of the Reunion Committee, I thank everyone for your support and help as we approach the reunion weekend!

UPDATE posted July 29, 2023:
This message contains the important details you have been waiting for about our 55th Class Reunion:
A) The Registration Form for the Reunion Weekend September 8-9 2023, and...
B) The Hotel Room Block Menu for those of you who do not reside in WNY.
Please read ALL of the information contained in this message regarding both of these documents as well as other pertinent information about the big weekend ahead.
A) Registration Form –
Registering for the Weekend: Please page forward to the "Registration & Contact Information" page to complete the .pdf form that is linked from there, and to update us on your Contact Info.
B) Hotel Room Block Menu -
Booking a Room: The Committee has reached out to the various hotel properties in WNY that we feel are strategically appropriate for our weekend. Our events are in the general Downtown Buffalo area and in Amherst proper. Therefore, we have concentrated on hotels in Snyder/Williamsville, as well as some selected properties around Buffalo Int'l. Airport, as well as some Downtown properties at Canalside and Delaware Avenue. It is possible that a particular property may not have room block availability and we strongly recommend that people check their websites – we have noted those on our Hotel Lodging Menu for your convenience.
We have prepared a listing of 9 hotel properties in the WNY area where designated room blocks have been reserved. All of the details are contained in the Room Block Menu on the fourth tab of this website. For more information, click here: "Accommodations/Resources".
There is a fairly wide range of hotel room prices for you to choose from. Here are our 3 designated hotel regions within Western New York for the weekend:
Note: The Reikart House Buffalo, formerly the Lord Amherst Motel, is listed on the menu, but hotel room blocks were not available for our particular event, yet the property has been a very popular one with visitors. You can contact them directly for room availability.
In addition to the wide range of room pricing, there are also various cutoff dates for room block reservations. Please make sure that you are aware of these dates when reserving a property. Hotel rooms may be in short supply over the weekend of our event.
Once we have full schedules of upcoming fall activities, we'll know which ones may impact our event. If you are coming in from out of town, you may wish to book your rooms early and lock-in room rates and availability. Last minute room inventory may be at a premium and you can always cancel if necessary.
Because the June-September timeframe is the busiest of the year for hotel reservations in Buffalo, it is very important to get your reservations done in a timely manner. The weekend of our reunion will be a very active time in WNY with many events taking place. Just one example is the University at Buffalo plays football at home vs. Rutgers on Saturday September 8th. This, and other area activities would affect room inventory and pricing if you attempt to book after our designated room blocks have expired. Just as in previous years, we have created room blocks for your benefit, but actually making the hotel reservation will be your responsibility. If you have questions regarding anything related to these hotel details, please contact Clay Pasternack via cell or e-mail (listed below) and he will be happy to assist you.
Other Weekend Events:
The Reunion Committee has finalized the above details and we are continuing to discuss and fine-tune other potential activities for the reunion weekend. If any other events are added, they will be posted on our website and described through more frequent e-mail communications as we get closer to the event.
We encourage you to plan some free time to see other class members, friends, and family while in the Buffalo area. It is very possible that there may be an Amherst Tigers home football game that weekend. Any events planned for the weekend will be open to ALL members of the class and are considered “Official Reunion Events”. If you have any suggestions beyond what we're already planning, please contact us with your thoughts.
Outreach:
This is where everyone can help! We are looking for a few people who would like to assist us with outreach to contact our class members and encourage everyone to attend the event – please e-mail or call Clay if you want to participate in developing an even more successful and enjoyable 55th Reunion event. The importance of making this a fun and enjoyable weekend rests on all of us to get as many of our friends to participate in the weekend as possible. Social Media is still an important tool for reaching many of our class members, particularly with the Class of 1968 Facebook Group. If you are not familiar with it, please go to Facebook where you can find out how to join the group. It is specifically for our class members only. The official name of the group is "Amherst High School Class of 68 Classmates".
Your feedback is welcomed and encouraged! All of our Committee members sincerely thank you for your support!!

JANE SULLIVAN ARTICLE IN THE AMHERST BEE
Jane Sullivan has been a crossing guard in our school district for many years. Jane came to our school district at Smallwood Drive during 5th grade (too late to get her photo in our class picture!) and graduated with us in 1968. The Amherst Bee has recognized her service to the community. Thank you, Jane!
Excerpts from the full article by Amy Wallace, Editor, the Amherst Bee, also appears in the ACAF alumni web site Tiger Tracks on line publication, and via email as a jpeg file:
Jane Sullivan ’68 | Crossing guard marks 50 years on the job
A staple at the corner of Main Street and Lamarck Drive in Amherst for the past 35 years, crossing guard Jane Sullivan has seen a lot of life go by in her 50 years on the job.
Sullivan started working as a crossing guard for the Town of Amherst in September 1972 and is still going strong 50 years later.
“I grew up in Snyder,” Sullivan said. “I had 10 siblings and was a graduate of Amherst High School.”
Sullivan earned an Associate Degree in Food Science from Erie Community College. “From ECC, I worked at Roswell Park for a while then decided to try for a crossing guard position,” Sullivan said. She was hired in 1967 and worked for the Amherst Recreation Department for a time before becoming a crossing guard. “When I wasn’t crossing, I did baby sitting for my niece who is now in her 30's,” Sullivan said.
Being a crossing guard is a part-time, seasonal position that is typically 34 hours a week. The town pays the crossing guards but the Amherst Police Department oversees them. “I started off at the corner of Evans and Eagle Streets,” Sullivan said. “Then I went and crossed students at Smallwood Elementary School who took religious education classes at Christ the King Church. I’ve been doing that for the past 35 years at the corner of Main and Lamarck.

John Schmidt
On a very sad note, we are passing along the news that class member John Schmidt passed away in January of 2021 after a battle with Acute Leukemia. The entire obituary was posted on the ACAF web site a number of months after his passing and we will be posting it in an email for you to read the details.
“Jack” was one of the goalies on the Amherst hockey team in its inaugural years during our time at ACHS. He went to Smallwood Drive, the JHS and the HS for all of our 13 years.
The following is the obituary that appears on the ACAF Website:
John W. "Jack" Schmidt, 70, of Ledyard died at Smilow Cancer Hospital, Jan. 24, 2021, after a battle with Acute Leukemia.
Prior to his retirement, Jack worked as an engineer for Electric Boat in Groton for 20 years. He was the beloved husband to Christine Schmidt of Ledyard. She and four sad pets survive him. Besides his wife, Christine, he is survived by sister-in-law Lydia DelGrosso and her children Luke, Evan, and Olivia DelGrosso, all of Ledyard, who are heartbroken at the loss of their favorite, doting Uncle Jack.
Anyone who met Jack knew he was a terribly kind and gentle man. His retirement life was filled with work at the Connecticut Humane Society where he sometimes volunteered four days a week as a photographer, dog walker, and cat cuddler. He loved taking the photos, working with the staff and enjoying the animals. In addition, Jack delivered food and water to the New London Community Meal Center twice a week for many years. Jack filled his retirement years with warmth and kindness exemplifying what it means to live a good life of service.

We are very sorry to report that another member of our class has recently passed away. Early this evening, emails from Charley Keeler and Bruce Mitchell were received regarding the passing of Sarah Roholt on April 19. The obituary that Bruce sent has been posted tonight on the ACAF website. Sarah was known to many of us during our senior year as the lady with the camera. Many of the candid photos in the Tower yearbook were courtesy of Sarah, as she roamed the hallways and classrooms during 7th period catching many of us just being ourselves. The obituary is a wonderful tribute to Sarah and how she touched many of our lives. Please check it out on the ACAF website.
